Got Milk?

As I mentioned earlier this week, Jerad and I have started drinking only unpasteurized, raw milk. This was done after a lot of research on both of our parts. For ever I have gone on and on about how cow's milk is not good for you. We don't drink very much milk, I'll buy a 1/2 gallon or gallon and usually have to throw it out because it has expired.

I have a hard time processing milk. I feel sick and will get bumps on my face if I drink very much. As a kid, I couldn't drink cow's milk at all. I would drink fresh goat's milk. Pasteurized cow's milk is the number one allergic food in this country. However, even people who have been allergic to pasteurized milk for many years can typically tolerate and even thrive on raw milk.

The pasteurization process, which entails heating the milk to a temperature of 145 degrees to 150 degrees F and keeping it there for at least half an hour and then reducing the temperature to not more than 55 degrees F, completely changes the structure of the milk proteins (denaturization) into something far less than healthy. While the process certainly destroys germs and bad bacteria, it also destroys the milk's beneficial bacteria along with many of its nutritious components.

Pasteurizing milk destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamin B12, and vitamin B6, kills beneficial bacteria and promotes pathogens. You may notice that raw milk left out will sour naturally but pasteurized milk will rot. This is because the beneficial bacteria in the raw milk helps to keep putrefactive bacteria under control. Pasteurized milk, however, does not have any of the beneficial bacteria left to keep it from rotting.

Then, of course there is the issue of the antibiotics, pesticides and growth hormones and the fact that nearly all commercial dairy cows are raised on grains, not grass, like they were designed to. This will change the composition of the fats in the milk, especially the CLA content.

Raw milk is an outstanding source of nutrients including beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus acidolphilus, vitamins and enzmes, and it is a great source of calcium.

Jerad, who usually just placates my stances on these kind of things has become a HUGE advocate. He is preaching about unpasteurized milk to anyone that will listen. He says it tastes creamier and also like grass?!?! I can't really tell the difference. Like I said, I couldn't drink cow's milk as a kid (pasteurized cow's milk) so one of our neighbors that was a sheep farmer got a goat and I grew up drinking raw goat's milk. So, this reminds me a lot of the goat's milk except milder.
Depending on what state you live in, it may be difficult to purchase, www.realmilk.com has a page that can help. In CA many health food stores, and some markets carry it. It is more expensive. We were already buying organic, milk to make sure that the milk we were consuming was free of artificial hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and synthetic fertilizers. The raw isn't too much more. For us its not bad because like I said, we don't drink a lot of milk. Even if you do, what's a few more dollars a week?

Both Paso and Atascadero have dairies that sell raw milk, but we decided to order from a big dairy in Fresno, Organic Pastures that supplies to the whole state and is closely regulated. They have a very informative FAQ page, but here are a few interesting highlights from it:

*****

What is homogenization?

Homogenization is the process of destroying the natural butter fat cells found in raw natural milk. This process uses extreme pressure to break apart the soft buoyant fat cells, which cause the remaining small fat pieces to blend into milk and no longer float to the top making the cream line. Some European countries have studies that show that this process is dangerous and may strongly contribute to heart disease and arterial plaguing. Our FDA disputes these findings under pressure from the strong dairy lobby. Homogenization is not a required step, but rather a step of convenience to deny the consumer the ability to see how much cream is actually in the milk they buy.

Why is milk pasteurized?

In the 1800s, many US dairies began commercially producing low quality raw milk in the inner cities of Boston and New York and others. These Brewery dairies would feed their cows very poor quality "brewer's mash." The resulting milk was very weak and nearly blue from lack of protein, mineral, and fat content. This occurred during the Jamaican rum embargo. During this same time period, the dairy industry did not use or have access to refrigeration, stainless steel, milking machines, rubber hoses, hot water, or chlorine as a sanitizer. TB and Brucellosis were rampant (not to mention horse manure on the streets, flies, and lack of public sanitation and sewage) and the cows were milked by hand without mechanical machines. The cows stood in manure and there was no access to pasture (sounds like some factory dairy farms of 2005). The resulting unhealthy milk from these sources literally killed millions. The heating of milk to high temperatures reduced this horrible blight. During this same time period, milk from the countryside taken from pasture grazed healthy and clean cows was the best medicine of the day. In fact, the Mayo Clinic used this high quality country raw milk as a basis for many disease curing therapies. This was the untold story of raw milk. Because of pasteurization successes, commercial interests prevailed and all dairies (the good, bad, and the ugly) then began to pool their milk so that "nobody would die," even if milk quality was very poor. This was great news for milk mass marketing, and creameries created high profits. These pasteurization practices continue today with the chief benefit being extended shelf life. These modern dead milk products now cause allergies and lactose intolerance to huge sectors of the population. Current (PMO) Federal standards for pasteurized milk permit 100,000 bacteria per ml for milk going to be pasteurized with as many as 20,000 injured or living bacteria to be alive after pasteurization, and this may include pathogens (this is arguably the reason why milk is pasteurized). California standards for raw milk require that milk sold for raw consumption have fewer than 15,000 live bacteria per ml and no pathogens. OPDC averages about 1500 beneficial living bacteria per ml (and never a human pathogen).

What are pathogens?

Pathogens are disease causing bacteria and organisms. The three human pathogens that are tested (state mandated) at OPDC include Listeria Monocytogenes, Salmonella, and Ecoli 0157. To date, not one of these pathogens have ever been detected by any test at OPDC or conducted by any state or federal agency. Tests privately performed at OPDC (BSK labs) showed that even when these pathogens were added to OPDC raw milk at extremely high levels (7 logs) they would not grow and die off (test results available upon request).

OPDC milk products are highly pathogen resistant. In more than 32 million servings, and more than five years of intensive testing, not one single pathogen has been found or detected. Not one person has complained to the state of CA that they have become sickened by an OPDC product. Tests performed by UC Davis, Dr. C. Berge DVM revealed something quite startling: Fresh manure from OPDC cows did not contain Salmonella. At other dairies tested, many of the findings were positive (31% of conventional milk tanks tested showed a human pathogen present).

In summary, it has been theorized that the combination of grass feeding, no antibiotics used, no hormones, and low levels of grain used in diet cause a change in the cows immune system and rumen. This change in physiology directly inhibits pathogen development in the milk (actually a transfer from environmental contamination that does not seem to occur; there are no bad bugs in the manure that transfer into the milk and the clean raw milk is highly pathogen resistant).

Anyways, I realize this is not something for everyone, but maybe you'd be interested in trying it once, or at least learning a little something new:)

I guess that's one way to get some rest...

You know how I've been whining about being tired and too busy and blah blah blah? I guess it caught up with me last night. Jerad called me at 5 and said that he would be working late, so not to come pick him up, and he could probably get a ride later but would call me if he couldn't.

So, I meandered home.

I decided to turn on the election coverage before making dinner... and woke up 2.5 hours later. I had fallen asleep on the couch with my boots on and everything. The sucky part is hat woke me up was Jerad coming home and apparently he had called me about 12 times because he DID need to be picked up.

Sorry babe.

He gave up and took a company van home (which also meant I got to sleep in a little this morning since he had to take it back so I didn't drive him).

Luckily he's sweet and didn't mind and figured I must be exhausted to pass out like that, sleep through his calls, and all three dogs and three cats barking/meowing/howling for their dinners. I do have a history of just passing out on the couch when I get sick. The good thing is, he has a history of being amazingly sweet. So he dealt with the pets, made me dinner, and we got in bed early and he read to me for like an hour then gave me a massage. When I say "early," I mean like 8:00.

But, I am feeling much much better today. I think I just needed some rest. Looking back, I haven't actually been sick since March. One little time in July, but that was just cause of something I ate. This is super rare for me. I used to ALWAYS be sick. I think changing my diet so much this year, plus taking such good supplements has made a big change in my immune system. That and working out and drinking such copious amounts of water:)

I am just crossing my fingers that I don't get ill because I have about 2 weeks of vacation left for the year (plus the 2 weeks off we get PAID) and I do not want to waste it being sick haha.

In other news, I heard something about we have a new President? JK.

PBR how I love thee...

Since Halloween dared to fall on the first day of the PBR finals, we stayed home this year which was more than fine by me. First of all, I could care less about Halloween. I'm saving my enthusiasm for when I have kids who I can torture dress up and parade around. I did don a costume and threw the candy out the door as fast as I could so I could get back to PBR.... er, I mean lovingly placed sugar in each adorable baby/child/teen/adult's basket, commented on their costume, and slammed the door... our little neighbor Cody was sooo stoked that I was wearing a costume, he made his parents check it out. Haha awkward!

Anyways, PBR! Last weekend was the first weekend of the finals. As you know, I am OBSESSED with Professional Bull Riding... hmm, actually I just checked for a post to link back to explaining my obsession and there isn't one. Just a little mention at the end of this one. I think that I couldn't put it into words. Lets just say, imabigfan. It is the only sport I follow. I check the rider stats, bull stats, injury reports... OBSESSED.

This year, the new PBR Team Shootout format came to our fair. Obviously, we were front and center. It was the second ever event in the Shootout tour, and the first hadn't even been televised yet... so VERY EXCITING! Also I got to meet Adriano Moraes 3 time world champ who is retiring this year. YES!

Back to the Finals, they were amazing. Justin McBride has announced that he will be retiring right after the finals. Wow. He is in the prime of his career. Crazy. Thanks for the 2 weeks notice, sheesh.

Me and LJ Jenkins.... I sort of didn't want to let go....

Me and Adriano Moraes because we should just stare at him again....

then a few other things:

So, now you know, if you ever want to see me amazingly excited, mention PBR. And if you ever want me to be at party, make sure it doesn't coincide with a big PBR event:)

Since we did turn down all Friday Halloween invites, we went to a party on Saturday night instead (after PBR round 2 was over:). I'll post pics of that soon.

******************

A few months ago when I made the decision to not go to school this fall even though it would put me 2 classes away from my BA, I told myself all sorts of little lies.

"You'll have so much more free time."
"You can go to bed early and sleep in on the weekends."
"You'll be able to cook dinner
"You can enjoy the Holidays."

These things could be true... except we have jam packed our schedules with so many "extra curricular activities," I feel like I can't breathe lately. Seriously, a different obligation 4 out of 5 week nights, and then there.is.always.something. on the weekends. If it sounds fun, we just can't say no. Even if it doesn't sound fun, but people we like will be there, count us in! Erm, that hasn't been working out so well.

Yesterday I told Jerad I wished I were on my death bed so at least I could have an excuse to lay in bed. I think he thought I was joking?

This is the busy season for Jerad. So besides working all manners of overtime at work, he is also having to spend the weekends submitting proposals and planning out all of this stuff for side jobs he has coming up. All of these side jobs he has been putting off all of a sudden are ready to go at the same time. I think he is working 3 out of the next 4 weekends... I've started driving him to work just so we can see each other more (and he likes my warm toasty car). Driving him also means that we have to leave the house at 6:30AM now. By the time I pick him up, its after 6 assuming that he gets off on time.

So, in an effort to keep my/his/our sanity, we are going to practice saying "no." Hmmm, we'll see how this works:) I just want to be able to look forward to going out instead of it being one more thing that we "have to do" each day.

We are quitting the Dave Ramsey class we were taking on Wednesday nights. Its too hard with his work schedule. We have all of the materials, so we can work on it at home, then take it next time around when the days are longer and everything else isn't so crazy. We just didn't have time to actually read the materials we were supposed to, so we weren't getting much out of the class.
Thank goodness, softball is also over, so that frees up Thursday. Hopefully this month we will be able to get back to our dance classes, I think there are only 2 meetings due to Election Day and Thanksgiving.

I have been managing to cook dinner every night and we have been trying out some fun new recipes. The Dream Dinners thing has also been helping for when I don't have time to cook, and at least we aren't eating out or eating unhealthy. Speaking of healthy eating habits, we are making the switch to drinking only unpasteurized, raw milk. More to come on that later.

So, I'm hoping that just learning to be able to say "no" every now and then will make me way less stressed, and maybe get rid of these seemingly permanent black circles under my eyes. One can only hope:) Besides, I need to save up some energy for the twenty-something pies I inevitably end up making for anyone that requests them during the next 2 months. Mmmmm, pie....

Somebody Broke my Boyfriend...

Lately Jerad has been super great to me. He has been working a lot of overtime lately which has left me pretty much alone to do all of the errands, cleaning, shopping blah blah.. so, Monday he decided to help out be spending two hours cleaning and organizing the kitchen, fridge, and cabinets. That was like a Stephanie dream come true. While he was doing that, I got a bunch of laundry washed, and all of the floors vacuumed and washed.

Later, he ran errands with me and I gave me a one hour back rub. Trust me, this is not normal.

Then, in an effort to keep me de-stressed, he Split! His!Head!Open! Ya. Apparently him and Josh, one of his co workers, were making metal something-or-another that Jerad was going to weld. Jerad was bending down over his to use a plasma cutter or angle grinder or some man tool, right as Josh raised up the one that he was working on. It had sharp metal threads and just sliced right into his forehead apparently down to the bone.

Did he call me, text me, warn me? Nope. I come home to him mowing the lawn with all this bandaging on his head and hear how everyone thought that he probably needed 5 or 6 stitches but he didn't want to go get them. Oh goodness. Hopefully the gaping wound gash isn't as big as the bandage.

He started backtracking and claiming it wasn't that bad after he figured out I.was.pissed. that he refused to see a doctor. I mean come on, 1) he has good insurance and 2) it doesn't even matter cause it was a workman's comp thing anyways. It will just suck if it heals into an ugly scar cause he was too scared... er, busy... to get it looked at. Plus, hello, he got cut by probably a dirty piece of metal... I hope he cleaned it well.

The good news is besides being a little sore, he feels fine. I called him at lunch today and he was having a little jam sesh in the warehouse with Josh. Who by the way feels TERRIBLE about the whole thing. Which is why I encouraged Jerad to occasionally pause and ask him if he could "hear that ringing sound?" Or pretend to forget the names of certain tools, and call Josh by the wrong name.

Cause I'm nice like that :)

Miffed.

The Universe conspires against me.

A few weeks ago I was looking for something in an old email account to send my sister and couldn't find it. In fact, the whole folder that it should have been in was gone. I thought it was strange but decided that I must have deleted it an forgotten.

Then today I tried to log into something else and kept being told that my password was invalid.

Strange...

I doubt its another blonde moment because I've had the same password for like 3 years now. SO I went through the security questions and thank goodness THOSE all worked and I was able to change it.

What super sucks is, almost all of my passwords for everything are the same. Emails, bills, credit cards. So... to be safe just in case I think I should change all of them. Its going to take me forever!!!

Plus, I'm bad at that. They changed our door combo at work over a month ago and every day I still enter the old one. So, if I never email, myspace, or blog again, you'll know why. I can't remember my damn password.

My most embarrasing moment.... *ever*

Probably most of you have heard this story, but I'm sure some of you haven't. Since Jerad eluded to it in his lil Q&A sesh, I'll elaborate.

Let me preface by saying that Jerad and I have been friends for 11 years now, or 12? I loose count. Anyways, he was always the innocent, rules following, goodie-two-shoes one. I was by no means a wild child, just more daring than him.

Okay, fast forward to the year after we had graduated. I had been with my boyfriend for 3 1/2 years. His parents were out of town. You see where this is going right? (Of course you do... but that thought had NEVER crossed Jerad's mind even once even though he hung out with us all.the.time.) I had this whole night planned, candles, wine, lingerie, blah blah blah. My boyfriend worked up the street and was supposed to be coming home right after work.

Exactly 5 minutes after his shift was over, there was a knock on the door. Every one knew his parents were gone, we weren't supposed to be there, it was clearly my bf right?

Me: come in!

So, Jerad comes strolling on in... with Nick in tow... who at the time was 13. The little brother of his best friend. What! The! Eff!

Jerad (making nothing but straight eye contact): Um, did you know there were balloons outside?

Me: Uh... yes...

Nick: blatantly staring like a 13 year old boy would

Me: trying to will more clothes to appear on my body. Or lightening to strike me down.

Jerad (lots of eye contact): ...Um, I brought the mail...

Me (slowly reaching out): ... thanks...

and then they walked out.

About one minute later my boyfriend got home, having no idea what had gone on. he just saw the candles, wine, everything. He said something to me and I just burst into hysterical tears. He was confused and all I remember is him saying "What, I told you you looked nice?!?"

I tried to explain through my hysteria, and demanded that he call Jerad.

So, he did.

Him: So.. Steph is pretty upset. What happened?

Jerad: Well. I brought the mail. Thats it. I didn't see anything. *Click*

Then the worst part. We never spoke of it again. If he had teased me, I might have been able to get over it, but seriously, it was like it never happened. Except it was etched, no burned, into my memory. It was like Jesus had walked in on me. Actually I think my time line is off and we were still in high school because I remember never wanting to go back. So maybe this was the very end of our Senior year or something. No matter when the heck it was, I was mortified.

***

Fast forward 6 years. I was riding in the car with Danielle and Jerad. We are all laughing and talking about different things.

Danielle asks me "what is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?"

My heart stops. I remember how I felt. I turn around at her and glare. She knows the story. Jerad and I have still never spoke of it. She laughs as she realizes. Jerad gets confused. I sigh and look at him.

Me: remember that time in highschool?

Jerad: stares at me blankly

Me: ahh! when you and Nick...??

Jerad: ...

Me: Brought. The. Mail.

Jerad: Oh yeah.....

And we all have a little laugh.

We get to Taylor's house and Nick happened to be there. Jerad swears that he never said anything to him about our conversation in the car. The boys all go outside and are working on Taylor's truck. Danielle and I go inside and are watching a movie. Nick comes inside to get a drink. A light goes on in Danielle's head and all she says is:

"Wait, is this who was with him?"

And Nick gets this HUGE grin and goes "oh my gosh, are you talking about When Jerad and I totally walked in on you about to get it on???"

And I died again. So, I guess he didn't block it out like Jerad did.

Now that I've shared, what's your most embarrassing moment?

Sheryl's Wedding

Saturday we attended Sheryl and Shannon's wedding.

Warning: this post contains drunk dancing pics. What can I say, the more I drink, the more I have to dance... yet, the less able I am to do so. Anyways, without further ado:

And then it was time to par-tay...

Then back to the Bridal Suite to pack up and wind down:

After that, we headed to the Cliffs for an after party. Danielle and I may or may not have decided it was a good idea to take off our dresses and swim in the pool. Hmm... luckily there is no photo documentation of that part of the evening.

Sheryl was a beautiful bride, it was a beautiful wedding, and a lot of fun was had by all.

The End

Edit: I had to add these tha I stole from Liz's myspace:)

The last one is my new favorite picture... Gregg likes dancing about as much as Jerad does soo... Danielle and I helped him get his groove on.
